Some types of flooring that have suffered from abuse or neglect can be partially or fully restored to their original condition. If proper maintenance has not been followed, stains and discolorations can occur. With many wood floors, the previously selected floor color can be changed to a new color. The following types of floor can usually be successfully rejuvenated to extend their useful life.

Cleaning your hardwood floors once every 1 – 2 weeks is recommended, depending on the amount of traffic on your floors. Vacuum or sweep to remove dirt and grit; then using a hardwood cleaner (we recommend Bona Hardwood Cleaner) lightly mist a terry cloth mop and using a back and forth motion, clean the floor surface.

1. Never use water or damp mop on your wood floors. 2. Do not use petroleum based cleaners. 3. Sweep or vacuum floor regularly. 4. Wipe up spills immediately with lightly dampened soft cloth. Follow with hardwood floor cleaner. Use a vacuum or broom for dry spills or abrasives. 5. Use door mats outside room entrances in front of sinks and refrigerators, this will help keep dirt and grit off your floor and prevent damage and excessive wear. 6. Place runners or area rugs (over appropriate rug pads) in high traffic or pivot areas: Near doorways, hallways, in front of steps, etc. All rugs should allow floors to breath. Avoid rubber-backed or other non-ventilated rugs. 7. Install proper protector pads under all furniture legs. 8. Replace hard, narrow furniture rollers with wide rubber rollers. 9. Keep the relative humidity in your home between 45% and 55% 10. Protect your floor from direct sunlight. 11. Do not walk across your floor with high heels or shoes that have protruding or sharp objects. 12. Family pets are going to scratch any wood floor. 13. When floor loses its luster, it’s time to recoat. Consult an NWFA flooring professional.

All natural stone is porous and must be sealed to prevent staining and discoloration. Even when properly sealed, years of traffic and cleaning can still diminish the shine and beauty of the floor. In many cases, minor polishing and buffing may be sufficient to restore luster and the surface can then be treated with a penetrating sealer. Sometimes stronger measures may be needed. This may include grinding down the stone to unblemished levels and then restoration with specialized chemicals, sanding, smoothing, polishing and sealing. Though this process is not inexpensive, it is far less than replacement and keeps waste out of landfills. If you have good quality material and would like to renew its natural beauty, please call Floor Décor for a consultation.
